It is different for different people. Each of you is unique, and has a way of reacting to the same situation differently. The goal is to find your unique solution to your problem in a way that you are most comfortable with.
It is sometimes mysterious and confusing for someone coming for the first time for therapy. This is one of my favourite analogies on therapy:
think of all the confusions in your head as a ball of wool that has gotten tangled. The more you pull the wool, the tighter it gets. Now if you consider the therapist as your ally and the session as the room you rented for the duration, where you could just take out all the tangled mess from your head and put it down in front of both of you, without any fear of being judged or anything ever going out of the room, wouldn’t it be quite easy to let the therapist hold the mess and help you untangle it till its a neat ball again.
While you look at the entire lot, you could choose to cut out the unwanted parts and work on the ones you would like to save.
While you get everything off your chest to someone whose role is just to listen and analyse, their empathy might lead you to stop judging yourself as well.
It can work in different ways, but it always leads to compassion, understanding, self awareness and liberation. Therapy is a leap worth taking.
